Abstract

The writer reports on his experience of working with a group of artists to prepare tactual illustrations for students who are blind. Despite extensive scaffolding and ongoing workshops some artists experienced difficulty in moving outside the visual medium into the tactual medium. Three different avenues based on physiology, immanent critique and post-structuralism are explored to help understand why this might be so. As these avenues are not mutually exclusive perhaps all three are germane.
