Abstract

[Extract] Traits offer a new, quantifiable view of ecology. Yet consensus over their links with ecosystem functions remains elusive. We suggested one possible path out of the current utility crisis of trait-based ecology. Carmona agrees with our goals but questions our approach. We wholeheartedly welcome disagreement and criticism of our work; trait ecology can only benefit from stimulating debate. We respond here since some of the critiques raised illustrate our original uneasiness with trends in the discipline. Essentially, we are concerned about an apparent rigid devotion to complexity, both analytically and conceptually.
