Abstract

During 2020, the Green Island Jetty underwent significant structural repairs. As a part of Ports North commitment to maintaining the health of their port environments, James Cook University’s TropWATER was asked to assess and monitor the diverse range of hard and soft coral communities surrounding the jetty facility. Six 20‐metre transects at varying distances north and south of the jetty were selected to monitor the habitat before, during and after the jetty works; February, June and October 2020, respectively. This monitoring design was chosen to detect possible changes in overall cover (%) of hard coral, soft coral, algae, abiotic and ‘other’ benthic organisms to determine if the jetty works had impacted the nearby reef communities. These five broad categories encompassed species of animals, plants/algae and abiotic features (See Table 1). Possible ‘high impact’ transect sites were located relatively close to the jetty (TI, T2 and T6) and ‘low impact’ transects (T3, T4 and T5) more spatially removed.
