Abstract

• 192 plankton tows were conducted as part of a planned Asian green mussel surveillance program in Weipa port and adjacent to Pera Heads near Boyd Bay at the site of the Amrun project development in north Queensland.

• 12 additional samples were collected in Weipa port to check and review sampling collection, storage, transport and analysis protocols.

• The plankton tows were conducted in July/August and October of 2017 and February and May of 2018.

• The initial July 2017 samples were negative for any DNA. All subsequent samples returned DNA signatures but were negative for Asian green mussel.

• To have any chance of success in preventing the spread of a marine pest detection at an early stage is important. James Cook University’s TropWATER centre has monitoring programs in most Queensland ports and procedures in place for the logistics of working safely in remote locations and is ideally placed to support surveillance efforts.
