Abstract
[Extract] Apicomplexans are a group of protozoan parasites of outstanding medical and public health importance. The most prominent apicomplexan is arguably Plasmodium, with approximately half of the human population being at risk of malaria infection, and an estimated number of deaths surpassing 600,000 annually, mostly in Africa. Not surprisingly, substantial funds have been allocated to malaria research, while research on other apicomplexans, most notably those that affect farm animals, has consistently acquired substantially less funding.
