Abstract

[Extract] The black tetra, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi (Boulenger), is a shoaling tropical freshwater member of the Characidae, native to the rivers of southern Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia (Priestley, Stevenson & Alexander 2006). Squamous cell carcinoma has been reported in a number of species, for example Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. (Roberts 1972); oscar, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz; Rahmati-Holasoo et al. 2010); rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus (L.; Hanjavanit & Mulcahy 2004); gudgeon, Gobio gobio (L.; Mawdesley-Thomas & Bucke 1967); gulf menhaden, Brevoortia patronus Goode (Fournie, Vogelbein & Overstreet 1987); and the hybrid sunfish (Fitzgerald, Carlton & Sandusky 1991). This is, however, the first such report in a characin.
