Abstract

[Extract] The first circumnavigation of the world, by Lieutenant James Cook in HM Bark Endeavour, is well known as a voyage of geographical discovery. Officially, it was a voyage of scientific discovery in that its main objective was the observation of the Transit of Venus across the sun. ln reality, however, it was as much a voyage of natural history as anything else. That the botanical discoveries rivalled the astronomical and geographical ones was due solely to the influence, ambition and judgement of Sir Joseph Banks in securing passage for an entire natural history crew, and in appointing the remarkable Dr Daniel Solander as his assistant.
