Abstract

Como botánico de los Jardines Reales de Herrenhausen, el alemán Hermann Wendland viajó a América Central en 1856-1857 bajo los auspicios del rey de Hannover, para recolectar plantas vivas, al igual que especímenes de herbario, para dichos jardines. Él escribió un diario de su recorrido de casi ocho meses por Guatemala, El Salvador y Costa Rica, el cual se publicó en la revista Hamburger Garten- und Blumenzeitung. En este artículo aparece una traducción al español, debidamente comentada, de la primera parte de dicho documento, que abarca el viaje desde Guatemala hasta su estadía en el Valle Central de Costa Rica. La contribución de Wendland fue significativa en cuanto a la gran cantidad de nuevas especies descritas a partir de sus herborizaciones, que corresponden a más de 185 nuevas para la ciencia, provenientes de unos 1280 especímenes presentes en sus casi 540 recolecciones, especialmente orquídeas, palmeras y aroideas; la mayor parte de su colección se encuentra en el herbario de la Universidad de Göttingen (GOET). En su relato, Wendland no se limitó a cuestiones botánicas, sino que también abarcó una gran cantidad de aspectos de la vida cotidiana de los habitantes de Centroamérica, relacionados con sus costumbres, comidas, salud, religión, cultura y política. Entre estos últimos, escribió acerca de la rendición del líder filibustero William Walker quien, con el respaldo de los estados esclavistas, intentó establecer la esclavitud y anexar los cinco países centroamericanos a Estados Unidos.

As court gardener for the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, the German botanist Hermann Wendland travelled to Central America in 1856-1857 under the auspices of the King of Hannover, to collect living plants and herbarium specimens for the gardens. He wrote a travel diary of his nearly eight-month expedition through Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, which was published in the journal Hamburger Garten- und Blumenzeitung. In this paper we provide an annotated Spanish translation of the first part of that document, which covers the journey from Guatemala to his stay in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Wendland’s contribution was significant in regards to the large number of new species described from his botanizing, which correspond to more than 185 that were new to science from a total of about 540 gatherings represented by about 1280 extant specimens, mainly orchids, palm trees and aroids; most of his botanical collection is held in the herbarium of the University of Göttingen (GOET). In his account, Wendland did not restrict himself to botanical matters, but also encompassed a wealth of aspects of the daily life of Central American people, describing their traditions, food, health, religion, culture and politics. Among the latter he wrote about the capitulation of the filibuster leader William Walker who, with the support of the United States slave states, attempted to establish slavery and annex the five Central American countries for the United States.
