Abstract
[Extract] The Olympic Games can be described as a 'mega event' which Getz (2012) defines as "by way of their size or significance, are those that yield extraordinary high levels of tourism, media coverage, prestige or economic impact for the host community, venue or organisation." They are a magnet for idealists, opportunists and politicians. Big budgets and even bigger promises seem to be magnetically drawn to them. Events such as the Olympic Games provide an ideal breeding ground for White Elephants with their often-grandiose predictions of great benefits. Over-promising and under-delivering.
