Abstract
Analyses the agency allowed women in the Sherlock Holmes canon with reference to cultural structures such as class, religion, gender, ethnicity and 'customs,' but also wealth and beauty, and draws attention to the 'free pass" the latter two can provide some of Conan Doyle's female characters, in contrast to the negative portrayals of active female desire.
