Abstract
This paper explores how exploration-oriented and exploitation-oriented dominant logics in an organization affect the effectiveness and efficiency of its dynamic capabilities deployment. By conducting structure equation modelling (SEM) on 548 Chinese firms, the paper shows that an exploration-oriented dominant logic imposes a stronger positive effect on the effectiveness of dynamic capabilities deployment than exploitation-oriented dominant logic. However, an exploration-oriented dominant logic negatively influences the efficiency of dynamic capabilities deployment. We also found that more effective and less efficient dynamic capabilities deployment comes with stronger operational capabilities, which in turn are associated with greater firm performance. This paper extends the understanding of how the dominant logics of exploration and exploitation influence dynamic capabilities deployment in transitional economies.
