Abstract
We live in a world that is increasingly interconnected through the processes of globalization and where diverse cultures interact with each other in complex ways. The higher education sector is particularly impacted on by the opportunities and issues of cultural diversity, with international as well as domestic students and staff of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. In many High-Income Countries, the higher education sector has also to consider the ways in which the needs of First Nations students and staff can be met in contexts where histories of colonization and oppression have left their scars. Further, with the internationalization of the workplace, higher education providers have to prepare students who are capable of working in international spaces. This chapter explores some of the critical elements of mental health and cultural diversity within higher education and excavates the protective and risk factors that exist in the present context. It goes on to highlight the positive ways in which higher education institutions have responded to the challenges and opportunities of mental health and cultural diversity and posits some strategies for the future.
