Abstract
The paper focuses on a range of English curricula and syllabi from the late nineteenth century in New South Wales. Questions addressed include: How might the pedagogical arrangements installed through state education in infant and elementary schools during the latter half of the nineteenth century be describe? How did English teaching rather than geography or history teaching become aligned in the twentieth century with particular forms of moral and ethical conduct on the part of its students? Some conclusions are drawn regarding the links between English and particular modes of twentieth century personal comportment such as self-reflection, empathy and introspection.
