Abstract

Background: Studies on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically concentrate on high caregiver burden, maladaptive coping strategies, and dysfunction, predicting a poorer quality of life for parents of children with ASD. Conversely, in the face of these challenges, a proportion of this parent population defies the negative trend, experiencing benefits that are enriching and view their child as flourishing. However, existing literature that examines these positive experiences is limited. Aim(s):This study examined the journey of parents as they raise a child/children with autism Methods: An exploratory qualitative methodology with participants from Singapore and Australia who were interviewed online. Data from 11 participants was then analysed using an inductive thematic approach. Results: Results identified difficulties with regard to acceptance of the diagnosis, and external challenges such as stress and stigma, family and community dynamics, and professional engagement. Beyond these challenges, parents reported personal growth, resilience, meaning, adaptation and self-care as critical elements that contribute to parenting success. Conclusion: Caregivers of children with autism experience both negative and positive experiences. The study provides important insights into support systems that are crucial for caregiver wellbeing.
