Abstract

The first major new and critically supported selection of Ruskin's writings for a generation, covering his work in art history, museology, natural history, history, and politics.

Research Statement

Research Background John Ruskin (1819-1900) is among the most important and influential intellectuals of the Victorian age, whose writings are fundamental to fields as diverse as cultural heritage, art history, social justice, public science, and ecology. Previous collections of his work suffered profound limitations of either scope or scholarly integrity; this book is a radically new orientation of his tremendous contribution, published at a time when the issues on which Ruskin staked his reputation are of increasing importance.
Research Contribution This edition provides a holistic introduction to Ruskin's life and works, extensive introductions and annotations to his particular publications, a timeline and guide to further reading, and also a unique guide to the artists and architects with whose works Ruskin was most engaged. Uniquely, the extracts have been collated in historical sequence according to the texts as originally issued, so that readers can trace the development of his thought.
Research Significance Oxford University Press is the most eminent academic publisher in the English-speaking world, and the 'Twenty-First Century Authors' series of publications is a landmark project within its publishing schedule as regards the arts and humanities. Only the very greatest and most influential British authors figure in the series, and this publication has been timed to mark the bicentenary of Ruskin's birth; there is unlikely to be a similar publication for a generation and more.
