Abstract
This book, in general, offers different perspectives of the Paralympic Movement. The somewhat provocative title questions whether or not the Paralympics can be considered to be representative of elite sport or merely a distraction. The authors of this chapter firmly position themselves with the former classification. In this chapter we look at the Paralympics as a logical extension of the sport development process; a feature, of what Elias calls sportization, in which he parallels sportization to the civilizing process of societies (Flas, 1986, p.129). One feature of the current phase of the sportization process is that it embraces a level of newly endorsed social democratic sensitivity and includes principles of inclusiveness and tolerance that characterise the face of social thought and sport policy making of the current epoch. This emergent 'political correctness' could, in itself, represent an increasing level of regulation and restraint in sport behaviours, attitudes and practices. However, increasing rejection of intolerance towards 'difference' or 'otherness', coupled with increasing levels of legislation regarding inclusiveness, underpins the growth of the provision of opportunities and facilities for sport for both abled and disabled athletes. As sport for those with physical and intellectual disabilities has become less invisible, the figuration of sport has widened.
