Abstract
[Extract] Australian settler myth-making may privilege the frontier in the form of bush or outback narratives but cities and suburbs, manufacturing and machines, have been persistent realities and lived experiences for the majority of Australians. That this might be the case is underscored by an observation made by the historian W K Hancock, in 1930: 'The record of a bare six generations of British enterprise in Australia would be incredible were it not for the fact that it falls within the epoch of the stupendous energies let loose by the Industrial Revolution, which blazed and spread from France'.
