Abstract

Heartworm (HW) infection of dogs and cats is endemic in Australia and in recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of infections diagnosed in dogs in some parts of north Queensland.1 Whether this has been due to increased surveillance or something else remains unclear. The possibility of emerging macrocyclic lactone resistance was described as only "remotely possible" in one recent publication.1 Clinical disease is much less frequently encountered than subclinical infection, although heartworm infections may be underdiagnosed if mild, or misdiagnosed as something else such as allergic lower airway or lung disease in cats (so-called heartworm-associated respiratory disease, or HARD).2,3 Given the relative prevalence of canine and feline heartworm infections in other parts of the world where HW testing is practised widely, it is likely that feline heartworm infections are underdiagnosed in north Queensland.
