Abstract

I was invited to show large prints at the inaugural Burnie Print Prize in 2007. 'Pegs 1 to 4', and 'pegs to no pegs' belong to a series of prints about environment and change. The image is based on decaying survey pegs, replaced by surveyor Cleve McGuane, who has given the old pegs to the artist.

Research Statement

Research Background 'Pegs 1 to 4, pegs to no pegs' belongs to a series of art about environment and change. The images are based on decaying survey pegs, replaced by surveyor Cleve McGuane. The artist draws and photographs these items. The body of work includes a number of objects associated with measurement and mapping such as; survey pegs, milestones and fence posts.
Research Contribution Dislocated survey pegs are examples of measure that have been removed and redeployed from their location or space in mapping. In these digital screen-prints, the relocation of pegs to a horizontal position, (landscape format) rather than the intended vertical position, (portrait format) changes their purpose. This allows a new perspective, one that renders the markers of measure, impotent.
Research Significance The eroding objects depicted in these works cannot act as intended, that is, as locators; instead merely referencing the purpose they were designed for. They provide the key to un-map and to question whether dislocated and eroding or ‘performative objects’ can transcend ideas about materials and commodities to provide avenues for discourse about ephemeral nature, environmental degradation and potential regeneration.
