Abstract

Catch of the Day is an environmental work of art made from recycled materials. The sculpture address the problem of plastic in the oceans. Catch of the Day contains clear plastic bottles and it has a cloaca filled with plastic bottle tops and rubbish collected from the coast of Far North Queensland.

Research Statement

Research Background Climate change communication research has identified the imperative for thoughtful messages that respect a community's value frame. As art is a culturally constructed form of communication where ideas are rendered in a vernacular that is conversant with a region’s cultural views. Furthermore, change climate communicators have noted that visual and narrative forms of communication have a greater impact than the simple transmission of factual information. As works of art communicate through visual and narrative forms they are well placed to translate complex knowledge about climate change in a form that is accessible to a broad audience.
Research Contribution Catch of the Day makes a contribution to research by demonstrating how environmental degradation can be communicated to a wider audience. The sculpture is a public sculpture exhibited in an ECO fiesta and viewed by 10,000 people. This public exposure make an impact by enabling 10,000 people to learn that the weight of plastic in the world’s oceans is predicted to be greater than the weight of marine animals by 2050.
Research Significance This research is significant because communicate it highlights the option and value of creating works of art that can contribute to public understanding of climate change. The visual and narrative form of Catch of the Day has the capacity to speak to our psychological and emotional life. This form of communication has been shown to increase the impact and the heightened potential for retention of messages.
