Abstract

[Extract] Sir Robert Philp was one of the most famous Queenslanders of his time. He was respected as the co-founder of Burns, Philp & Co., the merchants who made their fortunes across Queensland and the South Pacific. Philp was twice Premier of Queensland, and represented Townsville in Queensland parliament for nearly 30 years. Yet he is now a forgotten figure. In this short biographical portrait, I argue that Robert Philp should not be forgotten, as he was a key figure in the history of Townsville, Queensland and the Commonwealth of Australia.
