Abstract

[Extract] Richard Moyle's latest publication is the seventh in the series Apwitihire: Studies in Papua New Guinea Musics, released by the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies and edited by Don Niles. This most recent release continues the series’ tradition of presenting new and quality research into PNG's diverse musical life (previous publications in the series include studies in traditional musics, hymnody, and popular culture from the Sepik River to the islands of PNG). It is also a continuation of Moyle's extensive career as an ethnomusicologist and anthropologist in the field of Oceania—the work here draws on 12 months of fieldwork conducted between 1994 and 2001. The volume is a welcome addition to the very sparse literature on Takū, and represents the second volume published in the atoll's indigenous language.
