Abstract

[Extract] This review addresses two of the more recent publications in the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies' (IPNGS) series Apwithihire: Studies in Papua New Guinea Musics, and considers how these texts represent the current state of ethnomusicological studies in PNG today. In guitar Style, Open Tunings, and Stringband Music in Papua New Guinea - the most recent publication in the series - Denis Crowdy rightly observes that "Papua new Guinea has provided fertile ground for ethnomusicological research"(5). Much of this research has focused on traditional music, and Richard Moyle's contribution to the series, Na Kkai Taku: Taku's Musical fables, can be classified in this category. Crowdy's work, on the other hand, is part of a growing area of popular music research in Papua New Guinea.
