Abstract

Going is a work out art consisting of forty-three butterflies created from leaves and paint. The butterflies resemble the iconic Ulysses butterfly that are common in Cairns. The piece addresses the gradual decline in the butterfly population in this region.

Research Statement

Research Background	These works of art seek to extend research into how ideas about the natural environment can be brought to light. Ideas such as the decreasing number of butterflies are abstract concepts. Works of art represent these concepts in a visual form and this can generate greater understanding.
Research Contribution	This work of art make a contribution to the understanding of how we can gain knowledge. The butterflies in going were hung in group that diminished in number over an 8 meter section of a trail. The piece makes a contribution to community understanding of the environmental changes and habit loss due to climate change.
Research Significance	The research is significant because it communicates the facts of climate change science in a manner that enables people from various walks of life to understand the veracity of the situation. The work was seen by an estimated 4,000 people who use the track for recreation.
