Abstract

This video challenges the social work student to articulate her/his role in a multidisciplinary team.

Mental health represents a significant area of social work practice. Through this video, social work students appreciate and learn to work from a multidisciplinary as well as clinical perspective. They are empowered to articulate what they do in aiding the consumer toward recovery.

Research Statement

Research Background "Approximately 45 per cent of Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives, ..." (Hungerford et al., 2015, p. 29). These alarming statistics is an important area of concern for the society. Social work has adopted a more holistic approach which is founded on social justice and human rights values. A strong emphasis by health practitioners regarding the bio-psycho-social model gives a good balance of understanding mental health and illness from opposite extremes of the medical model and sociological model of health (Bland, Renouf and Tullgren, 2009). These combinations demand partnerships across multidisciplinary teams to provide a holistic, comprehensive management.
Research Contribution The curriculum innovation repositions social work education in mental health with a focus on recovery and multidisciplinary perspectives. The aim is to enhance career development so that social work students appreciate and learn to work from a multidisciplinary as well as clinical perspective while focusing on recovery-oriented practice.
Research Significance The material will be used extensively in social work subjects on mental health and will strengthen the existing curriculum by addressing the identified gaps in the student's preparedness to articulate and perform her/his role in a multidisciplinary team.
