Abstract

[Extract] In June 2010, the Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner had announced a Gender Equality Blueprint setting out approaches to implementing the recommendations of the 2008 report Gender equality: what matters to Australian women and men (Cerise, S., & Black & White Media Australia, 2008). The recommendations are:

• Balancing paid work and family and caring responsibilities

• Ensuring women's lifetime economic security

• Promoting women in leadership

• Preventing violence against women and sexual harassment

• Strengthening national gender-equality laws, agencies and monitoring.

The SA identified that women were under-represented in leadership positions and needed specific consideration when planning their careers. These aspects are important to support and retain women and become an employer of choice for women.

There were no women in the Executive Team and they were under-represented at the executive and higher management levels of the organisation. The roles primarily filled by women were:

• Research scientists (18)

• Research support staff (20)

• Technical and corporate (31).

In order to make changes a group of female employees approached the Human Resources Manager to develop a mentoring programme within the SA.
