Abstract

[Extract] Since Federation, the Commonwealth has debated what role it should play in the development of Northern Australia. For many decades, fear of Asia was a powerful argument for the Commonwealth to develop the north. In more recent times, Australia's economic engagement with Asia has encouraged Commonwealth politicians to think again about Northern Australia, with its proximity to Asia now being a potential benefit to the nation.
