Abstract
This article looks at the origins, influences and impact of Geoffrey Bolton's A Thousand Miles Away, the first large-scale history of North Queensland. Published in 1963, this book had considerable impact on the next generation of North Queensland historians at James Cook University, some of whom would play a formative role in the rewriting of the history of race relations in Australia. This article explores the themes of A Thousand Miles Away and shows how those themes were investigated by other researchers in subsequent decades.
