Abstract
To help people manage their health and well-being, a greater understanding of the way commercial and non-commercial information is obtained and used in decisionmaking. We identify three areas of concern: theoretical foundations in this area are weak and primarily descriptive; assumptions regarding the use of Internet-based sources may not be valid and the majority of material is written in complex language that prevents a large percentage of people understanding it, impacting on their ability to make optimum health-related decisions. This study aims to enhance knowledge of key aspects of the areas, thereby helping to inform practice and policy debate.
