Abstract

This work is made up of three short films by Miyarrka Media (Paul Gurrumuruwuy, Fiona Yangathu, David Mackenzie and Jennifer Deger). The performances play with Yolngu modes of remix, using "cultural" costumes sourced on Ebay, remediating styles of performance honed in community settings and filmed on mobile phones for exhibition in gallery contexts.

Research Statement

Research Background In 2009 early models of video-capable mobile phones produced a rush of creative energy in remote communities across Arnhem Land. This collaboratively produced artwork (comprising 3 videos) by Miyarrka Media (Gurrumuruwuy, Yangathu, Deger and Mackenzie) enacts a remix of remix: a HD remediation of a genre of locally filmed, phone-made videos in HD format created for exhibition in gallery spaces.
Research Contribution This work investigates new vectors of identification and performance enabled through Internet connectivity and mobile phones. Featuring costumes purchased on EBay, and music downloaded from the Internet, the work demonstrates the ways that Yolngu are using the remix potential of digital media to remediate local and global in ways that challenge normative assumptions about the homogenizing effects of global culture.
Research Significance This work has featured in several major new media exhibitions by Miyarrka Media and has also been exhibited online. It featured featured as a centre piece in the Gapuwiyak Calling Exhibition at the University of Queensland and the American Museum of Natural History.
