Abstract

[Extract] Using dielectric resonators for microwave characterisation of materials requires accurate measurements of the unloaded Q-factor [1]. There are many techniques which can be used to determine the Q-factor [2,3,4,5,6,7], however currently the most popular methods are those based on measurements of S-parameters around the resonance due to the convenience of measurements using vector network analysers. It is well known that accuracies of individual techniques depend on discrepancies between ideal and experimental dependencies of the S-parameters introduced by the measurement environment. Hence to obtain accurate values of the Q-factor, it is necessary to account for non-idealities introduced by the measurement system.
