Abstract

This short story draws inspiration from the archives and is based on the life a Dr Lilian Cooper, Brisbane's first female medical practitioner.

Research Statement

Research Background This short story is a non-traditional research output produced as part of a PhD in creative writing that explored how fiction writers can enter a dialogue with the mandates of oral history in Australia. The research findings are published in Text (Van Luyn 2013), the Oral History Australia Journal (Van Luyn 2009 and 2011) and Ejournalist (Van Luyn 2010).
Research Contribution The decisions about the aesthetics of this story were made in direct response to my research findings, which demonstrated the way oral history as a movement is concerned with exploring the subjective experience of the past and with challenging grand historical narratives.
Research Significance The production of, and subsequent reflection on, this short story aids in the development of thought around hybrid or cross-over genres that are ‘located on the border between factual and fictive discourse’ (Foley 2005, 239). In Australia in particular, where historical fiction writer Kate Grenville’s comment on the history wars ignited a debate around the role of historical fiction in representing the past, these cross-over genres remain controversial. This practice-led research output, which tells the story of a little-known figure in Brisbane’s history, explores the way a fiction writer can use the form to challenge grand historical narratives, but that the fictive form has limitations in representing the complexity of past lives, as evidenced in archival documents and oral histories.
