Abstract

Our preliminary survey of the coral reef fish of Tuvalu includes 358 species (from 168 genera and 63 families). Most of these were recorded during an environmental impact survey carried out at Nui, Niutao and Nanumea, between January 1988 and August 1990. Additional species are added from our observations at Funafuti, historic collections and fishery surveys carried out in the region. The majority of the fishes recorded appear to have widespread central pacific distributions. No endemics were recorded, although likely groups such as the gobies and b1ennies are far from complete. The most diverse groups recorded were the Labridae (46 spp), Acanthuridae (35 spp), Chaetodontidae (26 spp), Serranidae (24 spp) and Pomacentridae (23 spp). A complete checklist will require collections made throughout Tuvalu, with particular emphasis on small, cryptic species.
