Abstract

[Extract] This overview attempts to concentrate on trends and generalities, and avoids the personalisation of views which has dogged the Indigenous values debate in recent years. An effort is made to disassociate the ideas presented from a good guy/bad guy conflict which aligns writers with the Sarra, Pearson, Langton, Dodson, Johns, Manne, or Windschuttle choice of philosophical guru. The author's long experience with separatism, his own subjection to forced tuition in another language, and his family's history as settlers and refugees from Apartheid, no doubt colour his reading of the current Australian situation.

This chapter avoids the pedagogical jargon associated with the education debate and is limited to the author's generalised views. No claim is made here that nepotism and closed-shop procedures are the sole preserve of Aboriginal Studies; on the contrary, while some elements of introspection may be somewhat more exaggerated in Indigenous Centres, the quality of research in other discipline areas is far from uniform.
