Abstract
[Extract] Approximately 215 species of birds have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef. The islands and cays of the Great Barrier Reef are especially important to seabirds with some 1.4 to 1.7 million seabirds visiting them each year to breed. The birds of the Great Barrier Reef can be divided into three groups based primarily on their habitat use, shorebirds, land birds and seabirds. These are collectively known as coastal birds.
