[Extract] This module is designed to support the development of action plans for engaging boys in learning through mentoring and related programmes.

Disengagement and alienation from school learning are important issues in the education of many boys. Where they occur or seem imminent, there is often a strain or even a breakdown in the social relationships linking boys to school, and in other social relations that might encourage and support their schooling. Related to this are the cultures and self-concepts of some boys, which can construct an opposition between what they see as a dependent and subservient position in school, and the independence they witness or experience out of the school context.
