Abstract
[Extract] In her poignant title, Fiona Paisley captures both the ambivalence of interwar feminist efforts for the betterment of Aboriginal women's lives, and the ambivalence of her own appraisal of their endeavors. Other scholars have remarked on feminist contributions to the burgeoning debates and disputes over Aboriginal policy in the period between the two world wars. But in depth, detail and sophistication, Paisley's study far exceeds earlier scholarship on the topic.
