Abstract
[Extract] As the depletion of natural resources and alteration of structure, functioning, and processes of estuarine and coastal ecosystems from human (economic) activity become apparent, new visions and tools for both science and governance are needed. In an interconnected, complex, and evolving world, disciplinary specialization in scientific enquiry can provide important analytical pieces; however, these pieces are often fragmented, and do not allow for an integrated and more holistic understanding about interactions between the human and natural systems on Earth. Reductionist science does not reveal pathways for synthesis of ideas as to how to formulate and solve problems that stem from the interactions between human and natural systems, and manage such interactions for sustainability.
