Abstract

This work is artist Anne Lord's response to the theme to present work as one of six artists who had traveled to Red Gate Studio to produce art work in China. Lord's concepts relate to investigating similarities and differences between the flora and produce in China and Australia.

Research Statement

Research Background Lord's 2010 reflections on 2003 in China relate to her first week, involving train travel through the country from Hong Kong to Shanghai. This journey went from the urban to the rural and then into a huge cosmopolitan train station. During the rural section of this trip she saw buffaloes being led through fields and people planting rice or tending vegetables. The images are the basis of the new work for the exhibition 'Red Gate Studio to Umbrella Studio'. Lord was the first of six artists from Townsville who traveled to Red Gate Studio, Bei Gao Beijing, China.
Research Contribution I collect seeds from my vegetable garden in Townsville, encouraged by the small contribution to biodiversity and growing our own food. Some seeds are from Asian greens and others from local herbs. The indigenous taro or sweet potato is propagated for the garden. Plants gathered from supermarket vegetable sections and plant shops are trialed in the garden. The tending of them is the basis of my drawings and watercolours. The works for this exhibition are a tribute to people who cultivate plants. It encompasses respect for Chinese cultivation.
Research Significance My images of patterns and plants, local and introduced involve mixed signs from two cultures, including the rural and the urban where creativity intersects. In contrast to overseas travel, the observation of subtle and humble activities, such as gardening leads to new ideas. Topics for tending and harvesting are universal and yet have origins in the local with implications beyond a region.
