Abstract

During the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in August 2011 leading Torres Strait Island artist Alick TIpoti presented his latest body of creative art works at Canopy Artspace in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The presentation titled Mawa Adhaz Parual—Sorcerer Masks included a performance work using elaborate costumes, voice and dance created specifically for the event. Russell Milledge from the School of Creative Arts JCU was engaged to capture the performance as it was presented live at the opening of the exhibition. Video and sound recording by Tai Inoue, post production by Russell Milledge.

Research Statement

Research Background Mawa Adhaz Parul (Sorcerer Masks). Alick Tipoti from Badu Island in the Torres Strait premiered his Sorcerer Masks, representing a new direction for this award-winning artist. He has exhibited throughout Australia, as well as in London, Berlin, Paris and New York, and his work has been featured in the exhibition Land, Sea and Sky: Contemporary Art of the Torres Strait at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane in 2O11. Research Contribution Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is a unique three-day event that merges an art market with a celebration of Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. CIAF is the only art fair in Australia to welcome commercial art galleries and Indigenous art centres to sell and showcase art by Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. This celebration is located at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal.
