Family: Retroviridae.
Group: Lentivirus.
ETYMOLOGY:
Lenti - from Latin lenti meaning slow because of slow pathogenic process, ie long incubation period from infection to exhibition of clinical signs.
SIGNIFICANCE:
In cats: Eventually causes immunodeficiency.
In humans: Not zoonotic.
