Research Statement

Research Background One of 20 photographs selected to represent Cairns in the "Face of a Sister City" photographic exhibition.
Research Contribution Cairns is the sister city to a number of cities around the world. To share information about Cairns, artists were asked to document features of the area that reflect our lifestyle. The bi-weekly Smithfield Markets are popular with locals and tourists and usually draw a crowd. This photograph, one of 20 in the exhibition, shows people meandering through the neatly-aligned plant stalls of the market.
Research Significance This photograph and exhibition documented the tropical lifestyle of the Cairns region. The exhbition began in Cairns at the Tanks Arts Centre and travelled around the world to the sister cities. It was a visual documentation of life in the tropics.
