Abstract
[Extract] The stage of formal operational thinking has been a passion of mine for over two decades, although at times I feel like one of the few remaining rats that have not deserted the sinking ship. The research reported in this chapter is an attempt to throw light on the relative contributions of Inhelder and of Piaget to the formal operations stage of Piagetian theory. The widely accepted, and relatively unquestioned, view is of Piaget's dominant and Inhelder's subservient role. I am shamefaced to admit that even though I have had a number of opportunities to visit Geneva and to talk with Barbel Inhelder about our mutual interest in formal operational thought, I had rather implicitly subscribed to the view that it was le patron who dominated this part of the Genevan intellectual landscape as strongly as he did the other parts. The lively and somewhat impassioned discussion that followed the presentation of the ideas in this chapter at the Cours Avance of the Archives Jean Piaget in Geneva, in September 1998, made me realise that for more than a passing few of the participants, I had raised some issues of importance which went beyond my self-imposed boundaries on the research into and theorising of formal operational thought (see also, Smith, 1998).
