Abstract

[Extract] Donald Francis Beech passed away in Brisbane on 27 October 2013 aged 86 after a period of illness. Almost universally known as 'Bondi', Beech was one of Australia's foremost tropical agronomists in the post-war era of northern development. Notwithstanding the fact he had no formal tertiary training in the agricultural sciences, he led a highly productive life as a CSIRO scientist and made a lasting contribution through his work developing new crops for the north.
