Abstract

This chapter reviews the relationship between bilingualism and cognitive enhancement. The first section identifies cognitive superiority in bilinguals compared to monolinguals, and the second section is dedicated to the possible causes and cognitive structures implicated in such enhancement. The rest of the chapter focuses on foreign word acquisition by monolinguals and in bilinguals with one or two different writing systems. The studies reviewed here suggest that logograph users enjoy an enhanced visuospatial memory that facilitates the learning of new logographic forms.
