Abstract
Plus grand mollusque bivalve vivant au monde, Tridacna gigas peut atteindre 1,20 mètre de long, peser plus de 200 kilos et vivre plus d’un siècle. Tout au long de leur longue existence, ces bénitiers inscrivent dans leur coquille la trace de leur vie quotidienne, constituant ainsi une sorte de journal autobiographique.
Dans notre nouvelle étude, nous avons déchiffré l’un de ces journaux inscrits dans une coquille afin de reconstituer, mois après mois, les conditions climatiques à Jiigurru (également connu sous le nom d’archipel de Lizard Island), dans le nord de la Grande Barrière de corail, en Australie.
La coquille révèle qu’avant le réchauffement généralisé lié à l’ère industrielle, les étés à Jiigurru étaient plus frais qu’aujourd’hui, tandis que les hivers étaient, de façon surprenante, très similaires à ceux que nous connaissons actuellement.
