Abstract

While climate change is acknowledged as the greatest current threat to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), substantial declines in GBR coral cover and ecosystem values have also been attributed to chronic stress resulting from reduced water quality. To manage water quality and the impacts of poor water quality on the World Heritage values of the GBR, it is essential that we have effective ways to measure, monitor and report key indicators of water quality on the scale of the whole of the GBR.
