Abstract
Animal-borne telemetry provides conservation stakeholders with important insights into species' movements and habitat use (McGowan et al. 2017; Ropert-Coudert and Wilson 2005; Rutz and Hays 2009). Understanding local adaptations is especially important for threatened subpopulations, where tagging data can directly inform conservation strategies (Cooke 2008; Renshaw et al. 2023; Sharples et al. 2012; Williamson et al. 2024). However, installing tags requires non-natural intervention, making it essential that deployment methods minimize animal stress (Murray and Fuller 2000; Walker et al. 2012). Any restraint method must also be socio-politically acceptable to regulatory authorities and local communities, and safe for those doing the restraining.
