Abstract

[Extract] Under the nine years of Coalition government before Labor’s election in 2022, Indigenous policy had not moved beyond the conventional neoliberal approach of pursuing Indigenous self-determination through mainstream economic participation. Australia has not made any signifcant leaps in advancing Indigenous rights since the passing of the Native Title Act 1993. Since then, there have been major developments in other countries like New Zealand, where Māori rights have been recognised in the form of legal personhood over the Whanganui River (Crib et al., 2024); although more recently, Māori rights have come under attack from conservative parties in New Zealand.
