Abstract

[Extract] The Clarke River Shear Zone (CRSZ), which juxtaposes the Mossman Orogen against the Thomson Orogen, is one of two major transverse dislocations, with offsets at the scale of hundreds of kilometres, that separate orogenic systems within the Tasmanides. These structures are of considerable significance to Tasmanide fabric and history. In particular, the timing of dislocation is important in identifying episodes when partitioning of contractional stress and deformation derived from plate engagement applied during the long history of subduction of the Paleo Pacific Plate beneath eastern Gondwana (e.g. Henderson & Johnson, Citation2016; Rosenbaum, Citation2018), alternating with episodes of extensional stress and dilation resulting in subsidence and basin development (e.g. Abdullah & Rosenbaum, Citation2017; Folkes et al., Citation2025; Glen, Citation2013), granitoid emplacement (e.g. Collins & Richards, Citation2008) and orocline formation (e.g. Moresi et al., Citation2014; Rosenbaum et al. Citation2012).
